Often people take advantage of the olfactory system of the bass when trying to attract more fish to the end of their line. Bass in particular are really attracted to a few smells in particular. Of the scents that bass enjoy you have: salt, garlic, anise and a bunch of other spices.
A bass is equipped to determine whether a scent is “negative” or “positive” and will behave appropriately once that is determined. So of course, the companies who make fish attractants choose the positive smells to mimic their products after. Among the negative scents that the bass will avoid include gasoline or other strong odors transferred from your fingers and blood from a wounded schoolmate.
Bass have two nostrils on each side. One set of nostrils being the posterior and the other set being the anterior. While the fish is swimming, water flows out of the posterior nostrils after passing through the anterior nostrils and over the olfactory glands. This amazing olfactory system of the bass can actually detect 1 200th of a drop of a substance in approximately 100 gallons of water. For this reason alone, anglers suggest washing your hands before fishing and applying some sort of attractant to your bait, whether it is sprayed on or it is already impregnated into the lure.
Scent is not exactly the major factor in foraging for bass like it is with catfish, salmon and carp, but it does play an important role. Bass are known to hang onto a bait up to 30 seconds longer when a positive scent is present.

A great choice of attractant that I like to use are products containing a beeswax base in a tube like chap stick. Being that it is waxy, rather than liquid, it stays on the lure longer and there are no spills to worry about. I usually get my beeswax attractants from the company BassWax.

Have you ever been frustrated with all the people and noise at your local fishing hot spot? Competing with other eager fishermen begins long before the reeling begins. First, there’s a rush for arriving to the lake earlier than everyone else, then, another rush, trying to grab your favorite or best spot. If you’re an avid fisherman then the answer is yes. Wouldn’t it be great to have a fishing lake all to yourself? Wouldn’t fishing for bass in private surroundings be a dream come true? It sounds terrific, but how can you be allowed the luxury?
It’s worth the challenge. Land owners may be a bit suspicious of you, but who can blame them. No one, especially a property owner, appreciates trespassers and litterbugs. Sometimes they can be a bit distant especially when approached about fishing on their property. When you talk to these property owners be cordial and friendly. Assure them you are not going to trash their property and will be quiet and respectful while you are there. Try to give them about a week’s notice when you would like to fish. Be sure to let them know when you are there and when you are leaving.
Always ask them if there is a certain area they would prefer you park in. You don’t want to be a nuisance, be sure to respect their privacy, and, always be understanding, there may be times they will have to ask you not to come - even though it was pre-arranged. If they are very negative and give you an out and out no, thank them for their time.
You never know when you might see them again and because you handled it well this time they may say yes the next time. Once you establish yourself as a responsible guest, the private pond owner may allow you to invite along other bass fishing friends. Show a genuine interest, ask if there are more places on the land that they might allow you to fish on. Many good sized farms have lots of secret fishing spots. They may even know of other property owners with ponds that would not mind if others fished their pond. Always leave the property the same way you found it.
Clean up any trash you made. Offer the owners some fish, cleaned of course. Think for a moment, if it were your own property, how you would expect visitors to treat your land. Once you’ve established a friendship with the owner, it would be polite to send them thank-you notes and add them to your holiday list. Be thoughtful and suggest you are willing to help them out with a few tasks if they ever need a hand.
