Some Tips for Camping with Kids

June 30th, 2009 by admin in Recreation and Sports

There’s a lot of preparation and planning involved when you’re camping with kids and you need a lot of patience too. It can also be a little bit more tiring and stressful than your usual camping trip with your wife.

The kids always takes top priority so might have to make some sacrifices. Camping is an experience the kids will remember their whole life so it’s well worth it.

There are a lot of things you can do on a camping trip with the kids and it’s simply a rewarding experience. As a loving parent who want to have memorable experience camping with your kids you wouldn’t mind the extra effort at all.

To save you from having too much of a headache, here are some tips to start with:

- When you do the planning and preparation, get your kids involved in the process. For example, do they want to go hiking or fishing or both? Allow them to pack their own things while supervising them along the way.

All these things would make them see that you value their opinions and that you treat them as mature responsible adults. They are likely to act so because they would want to prove to you that they are.

- You don’t need an expensive kids sleeping bag. A cheap children’s sleeping bag does the job well enough.

- As a practice run for yourself and the kids try to do some backyard camping before the real trip.

- Practice using your camping equipment to make sure everything is working great and teach your kids some camping skills so that they can help out during the trip.

- Be sure to teach your kids some safety skills like blowing a whistle when they’re in trouble or how to use a compass.

- Gather round the campfire at night for some story telling.

- Teach your kids to respect the natural beauty of the outdoors by taking them on day hike.

- Don’t forget to teach them how to keep themselves safe at the camp. No playing with fire and no swimming in the lake alone are just some of the many rules they have to be familiar about.

- Create games out of camping chores to make them more fun and interesting. For example, engage them in a race for the fastest clean-up.

- Do some bird watching.

- Insect repellent and sunscreen should be in your pack.

- Give your kid a flashlight or glow stick so that they feel more secured at night.

- Among the things you can do at night is star gazing.

- The first aid kit is essential so don’t leave it behind.

- Have some night snacks. Not inside the tent of course. Before you go to sleep, a few chats and chips will surely be a great finale to a great day.

- Take some camping games for the kids.

- Don’t forget to pack extra batteries for the camera and lights.

Camping with the kids is a cheap vacation alternative especially in these tough economic times. Seeing the kids happy will make the extra effort worthwhile.
